The Week at a
Glance
Aldenham chased down the biggest run total in their club's history
to clinch an historic victory at Leverstock Green on Sunday. Baz
Letts, 18, hit a club record-breaking 181 not out to send the
village side to victory with just three balls to spare in the 40
over game, sparking a pitch invasion from the away side. Leverstock
Green's Australian number three, A. King, earlier smashed 200 from
about 150 balls as the home side set a dominant target of 301. After
losing the toss, Leverstock got off to a poor start, losing opener
Jordan Parkes fourth ball to a clever field placement from Aldenham
skipper and opening bowler 18-year-old Charlie Munroe. And the game
could have been very different had King been given out in his first
over after a strong shout for an edge behind from the away side. In
the blistering heat, Aldenham's bowlers failed to contain the
electric Tasmanian as spinner Michael Ward went for 29 from his
three overs and opener Chris Hewett finished with three for 134 from
his three-spell offering of 16 overs. Charlie Munroe was the pick of
the Aldenham attack, taking three for 60 from 12, while soon-to-be
hero Baz Letts produced an aggressive spell, taking one for 77 from
nine. A four from the last ball of the innings left Aldenham with a
monumental task, despite the favourable batting conditions, and
their makeshift line up began padding up to face what they thought
would be an inevitable and embarrassing loss. A six off the first
ball from Saachin Sangvi buoyed the crowd but when he was out three
balls later, followed by fellow opener Simon Letts, pessimism
returned. Baz letts got off to a flying start, quickly racing to 50
as Aldenham talisman David Whitehead (32) held up one end. Charlie
Munroe (35) set about pushing singles and twos while Letts continued
to smash the ball to all areas, leaving the away side with 20 to win
from three overs. But as wickets continued to fall, experienced
pressure player Peter Munroe stepped up with four needed from the
last over. A no ball and a three confirmed the victory, sparking
wild scenes as the shadows crept over the wicket and the dejected
Leverstock players trudged away from their third loss in as many
games to the spirited village side.
